Richmond Ballet kicks off its intimate and innovative 18/19 Studio Series November 6 with Studio One, featuring the Richmond premiere of In the Night by famed choreographer Jerome Robbins and Requiem, a world premiere by choreographer/dancer Nicole Haskins.
Iconic ballet and Broadway choreographer, Jerome Robbins, would have marked his 100th birthday on October 11, 2018, and Richmond Ballet is thrilled to join companies around the globe in celebrating his contributions to the world of dance. Known for his Broadway hits such as On the Town, The King and I, and West Side Story, Robbins also crafted some of the ballet world’s most memorable moments onstage in The Cage, Dances at a Gathering, and Afternoon of a Faun. Originally choreographed in 1970, the lilting In the Night features three contrasting sets of lovers who meet beneath the evening sky. Set to the music of Frédéric Chopin, which will be played live by pianist Joanne Kong, the ballet explores three different stages of relationships: the joy of young love, the calm of mature love, and the heat of passionate love.
A dancer with the Smuin Ballet, Nicole Haskins returns to Richmond after the success of her 2015 New Works Festival piece, From My Life, to embark on her first fully-commissioned work for Richmond Ballet. Set to Gabriel Fauré’s glorious Requiem, this world premiere explores the relationships we create throughout the chaos of life. Haskins explains that she “was particularly drawn to the joy that seemed to radiate from his score, as opposed to the more morose requiems of other composers. My desire is for the audience to be transported by the music and the dancing and uplifted by the divine radiance and hope that I feel the score possesses.”
