Richmond Shakespeare and Henley Street Theatre have come together to provide exciting new opportunities for students and adults alike! Whether you’ve just discovered your love for theatre or want to continue to work on your craft, we have an exciting set of workshops just for you.
This is a partnership with Center Stage and all classes will take place in the Genworth BrightLights Education Center at CenterStage, third floor, 600 East Grace Street, 23219.

Stage Combat for Students Instructor: Kevin Inouye
Middle and high school aged students learn how to safely swing a sword, take a punch and fall with skill in this workshop focused on physical movement and combat. Certified fight director Kevin Inouye uses rapiers, daggers, broadswords, household items and the human body itself to tell a complete story through action.

Shakespeare for Kids
Instructors: Mary Best Bova and Adam Mincks.
Students will embark on discovering Shakespeare through a child’s eyes. They will learn scansion, meter, and play language games, all in service to the start of a lifelong love of Shakespeare. Physical movement, vocal work, and purposeful play will all be a part of this super-fun class! Grades 6-8

Introduction to Shakespeare
Instructors: Lucretia Anderson and Elisabeth Ashby.
This workshop is designed for actors with some practical theatre experience but limited exposure to the works of William Shakespeare. However, total beginners are also welcome! Sessions will offer a glimpse into the life of Shakespeare: his childhood, his journey to fame and his success as the Western world’s most famous playwright. Participants will be exposed to the basics of Shakespeare’s language, as well as a host of the Bard’s fabulous tools: rhetoric, wordplay, puns, metaphors and verse. In addition, students will learn historical context, embedded staging cues, scene studying techniques and character study.

Shakespeare Audition Technique
Instructor: Thomas Cunningham.
This workshop is designed for actors with some practical theatre experience but limited exposure to the works of William Shakespeare. This course offers actors an opportunity to prepare new audition material and/or strengthen existing pieces in preparation for auditions. Actors should bring a memorized monologue to the first class; the instructor may also recommend further monologues or scenes for each student at the first session. Every class will include warm-ups and exercises, along with monologue and scene coaching.

Dialect Workshop
Instructor: Thomas Cunningham.
This workshop is designed as both an introduction and review of stage dialects. We will cover the fundamental sounds and characteristics of the British RP, Cockney, and NYC/Brooklyn dialects, with an ear to providing a strong foundation for newcomers, and honing to perfection the skills of experienced dialect users. The tools provided by this workshop are transferable to the acquisition of all dialects/accents, making it a great investment for all levels!
