Pigeons of War

August 21 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

With their innate ability to return to their home lofts, pigeons played key roles as military messengers during World War II. In World War I, the U.S. military successfully employed pigeons for warfare communications. By World War II, pigeons delivered maps, photographic film, and messages that saved hundreds of lives with a 99% success rate for delivery tactical messages as reported by the US Army in 1944. Join Virginia War Memorial Archivist Sylvia Marshall as she explores the interesting history behind military pigeons in the U.S. and the role pigeons played during the Invasion of Normandy.
