Winter is here, and there’s one way to guarantee we’ll see snow: Make your own at home! These salty snowflakes are easy and fun to make with just a few supplies and a little patience. And unlike real snowflakes, these crystalline beauties can be colorific!
What you need:
- Paper (watercolor paper is best, but cardstock or other sturdy paper can work as well)
- Pencil, pen, or markers
- School glue in a bottle
- Salt
- Watercolors or liquid watercolors
- Paint brushes
What you do:
- Draw a big snowflake or multiple smaller flakes on a piece of paper.
- Trace over each snowflake with a line of school glue.
- Sprinkle salt over wet glue.
- Shake gently to move salt around and cover any empty spots. Pour off excess salt.
- Set paper aside and let dry fully (at least an hour).
- With your paintbrush, mix color and a lot of water (unless using liquid watercolor paint).
- Paint over salt lines on snowflakes.
- Add additional colors and see how colors mix as they meet.
- Continue until snowflakes are just as you’d like them. Let dry!
