Brian Vogler still remembers the first time he saw the Tony Award-winning musical Les Misérables. It left a powerful impression on him that remains today.
“My introduction to Broadway was a touring production of Les Misérables,” says Vogler, vice president of marketing for Jam Theatricals, presenting company for Broadway In Richmond. “That trend continues with each generation.”
He believes Les Misérables is the perfect show to launch Broadway in Richmond’s tenth season, starting in October. “Our goal is to bring an engaging mix of Broadway titles – comedies, classics, family-favorites, and premieres. This season certainly checks all those boxes,” he says.
The season continues with the holiday classic Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and the longtime family favorite The Wizard of Oz.
It also features two new Richmond premieres. Waitress, the hit new musical featuring original music by Sara Bareilles – you’ll recall Sara Bareilles and Hanover native Jason Mraz teamed up for a few weeks to perform the show on Broadway this winter – hits the Altria Theater stage in February.
Richmonders will also get to enjoy the hilarious antics of the musical Something Rotten! Set in the 1590s, the show tells the tongue-in-cheek story of two brothers who set out to write the world’s first musical while the celebrated rock star Shakespeare continues to grab all the attention.
The laughter continues with the return of the cheeky musical The Book of Mormon, which is back by popular demand. “Richmond has proven to be a comedy town, and that is why The Book of Mormon is set for another return,” Vogler says.
In addition to the season lineup, Broadway In Richmond is bringing cheer to the holiday season with Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Chip Davis as an add-on option with any subscription package.
“We are excited to celebrate our tenth Broadway season at the Altria Theater, bringing the best of Broadway to the Richmond community and our subscribers. With our lineup in the 2018-2019 season, there is truly no better time than now to become a subscriber and enjoy the benefits of supporting great theatre in Richmond,” says Steve Traxler, president and co-founder of Jam Theatricals.
