Here’s What’s Happening in October 2013 at Henrico County Public Libraries

OVERDRIVE DIGITAL BOOKMOBILE VISITS HENRICO!
Tuckahoe – Wednesday, October 2, 1:00 – 7:00 PM & Thursday, October 3, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Henrico County Public Library is proud to host the 74-foot National Digital Bookmobile at the Tuckahoe Area Library parking lot. Readers of all ages will learn how to download eBooks from the library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos. All Henrico County Public Library cardholders who visit the truck will be eligible to enter to win a Kindle.

LESSER-KNOWN MONUMENTS OF RICHMOND WITH BOB LAYTON
Glen Allen – Saturday, October 5, 2:00 PM
Leave out the Capitol grounds, Monument Avenue, and Hollywood Cemetery and what is left? Many structures commemorating a variety of honorees and events, each with its own unusual story. Bob Layton, author of Discovering Richmond Monuments, tells why they are important. Book sale and signing follow the program.

Join us as we celebrate Fire Safety Month! The Henrico County Fire Department will visit with preschoolers to talk about fire safety. A fire truck may be available for a close-up look. Ages 3-5.

ARTHUR AND D.W. PARTY
Dumbarton – Monday, October 14, 10:00 AM
School’s out! Let’s shout! Join us for lots of fun activities about Marc Brown’s popular book characters Arthur and his sister, D.W. There will be great stories, games, and craft projects.

LAUGHTER YOGA FOR TEENS
Tuckahoe – Wednesday, October 16, 7:00 PM
Learn how laughing can help you beat school stress, have better friendships, and improve your health and attitude every day. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tuckahoe Library.

MAKE A BAT-O-LANTERN
Twin Hickory-Tuesday, October 15, 3:30 PM
Make Bat-O-Lanterns! Dress for a mess, please. Ages 3-5.

MEDICAL ADVANCES IN THE CIVIL WAR
Varina-Thursday, October 17, 7:00 PM
Dr. Charles L. Cooke, a retired doctor from MCV and a part-time park ranger at Chimborazo Park, will speak on the extraordinary medical advances achieved during the American Civil War.

CREATE YOUR OWN BOOK- Registration required
Tuckahoe – Saturday, October 19, 10:00 AM
Richmond author and educator, Kathryn Starke, will lead a workshop for aspiring authors ages five to ten at Tuckahoe Library. Participants will turn their story ideas into an illustrated, bound book. All materials will be provided. Sponsored by The Library of Virginia in conjunction with their 2013 VA Literary Festival.

ESL CONVERSATION CAFÉ

Join us for an opportunity to practice speaking English in an informal setting!

HALLOWEEN FAIR
Tuckahoe – Saturday, October 26, 3:00 PM
Join our West End Teen Advisory Board from 3-4 PM for their annual Halloween Fair for children. Games, crafts, face painting, storytelling and other activities. Costumes encouraged!

HALLOWEEN FAIR
Glen Allen – Monday, October 28, 6:30 PM
Get into the Halloween spirit at the library! Join us for some not-too-spooky games and crafts. Trick-or-treating stations will be set up throughout the library, so don’t forget to wear your costume! This program is presented by volunteers from the Northwest Teen Advisory Board and supported by the Friends of the Library.

HALLOWEEN MAGIC
Sandston – Monday, October 28, 7:00 PM
Join us for an evening of Halloween magic with Mr. B. Please come early, this program is limited to the first sixty people. Sponsored by the Friends of the Sandston Library.

HALLOWEEN FIRE & ICE
Twin Hickory – Tuesday, October 29, 3:30 PM
Mad Science of Central Virginia will amaze you while you learn. School aged children only, please.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT
North Park – Tuesday, October 29, 6:00 PM
From ghoulies and ghosties, and long-leggedy beasties and things that go bump in the night….Calling all tweens and teens (ages 10-14) join us as we tell scary stories from all around the world. Come if you dare! Flashlights will be provided.

SCARY STORIES TOLD IN THE DARK-Registration required
Fairfield – Wednesday, October 30, 6:30 PM
Tweens are invited to come listen to scary stories read aloud around the campfire! A snack will be provided. Bring a flashlight to keep the ghosts & goblins away!

TEEN SCARE-O-THON
North Park – Wednesday, October 30, 7:00 PM
Join us for Halloween food and fun . . . IF YOU DARE!!! Middle and high school students are welcome. Costumes are optional.
