Promoting Active Lifestyles in Richmond’s Youth

Call Federal Credit Union Marathon Junior set for Oct. 26

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Sports Backers will be hosting the second annual Call Federal Credit Union Marathon Junior in Richmond’s Byrd Park.
This kid-friendly running festival promises to promote an active lifestyle in younger generations, just as the Anthem Richmond Marathon does for older generations. In addition to a 0.5-mile, 1-mile, or 2-mile run, participants can enjoy a variety of other activities. Some of these include face painting, obstacle courses, hula hoops, and an on-site photo booth to remember the accomplishments of the day. In the event’s inaugural year, more than 850 children participated.
Megan Schultz, Call Federal Credit Union Marathon Junior event director, commented, “What they really end up taking away and remembering is all the fun they had, not only running or walking, but then all the interaction they had with the vendors and all the different activities on site.”

Event organizers also encourage participants to dress to impress, as awards will be presented for the best Halloween costumes. Eight-year-old Owen Andrews, a participant in this year’s race, expressed his enthusiasm, “I hope I win a prize. It sounds really fun. And I am going to wear a really cool and creepy costume.”
The Sports Backers not only promote active lifestyles through events, but the organization also works with the City of Richmond and surrounding counties to engage with children through its Kids Run RVA program. According to Jackie Holt, PR & Communications Manager at the Sports Backers, “We are reaching about ten thousand kids each year through our different running programs.” Kids Run RVA consists of a variety of different programs and events, including the Call Federal Credit Union Marathon Junior, all to promote physically active lives in Richmond’s youth.
