Chesterfield Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 11

The Chesterfield County Annual Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony, sponsored by the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, will be held on Monday, November 11, 2013, at 2:00 p. m. at the Chesterfield County Historic 1917 Courthouse Green on Iron Bridge Road. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Chesterfield County Public Meeting Room.

Representatives of Veterans organizations throughout Chesterfield and surrounding counties have been invited to lay wreaths along the Veterans Memorial Wall in front of the 1917 County Courthouse. Colonel Thomas Rivard, Commander, 59th Ordnance Brigade, U.S. Army Fort Lee will be the keynote speaker.

This year’s ceremony will include a memorial to Sgt. Aaron Wittman, U.S. Army, who died in the line of service this past year. His name will be placed on the Memorial Wall. A presentation of pictorial banners of Chesterfield’s Fallen Heroes in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan will be part of this year’s program.

The Lloyd C. Bird High School Chorus and the Thomas Dale High School Band will join the Thomas Dale and Meadowbrook Junior ROTC groups in an Armed Forces Salute. The Chesterfield County Veterans Day Ceremony is free and members of the public are encouraged to participate in this annual event to honor our men and women in uniform and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans attending this year’s program will be invited to participate in the “Veterans March” and will be honored with a sword salute prior to the beginning of the program. Additionally, the Virginia DMV van will be on hand to issue Veterans I.D. cards at no charge, courtesy of the Jeffrey A. Reed Memorial Fund.
