Olympian and Cancer Survivor will be Keynote Speaker

Shannon Miller, Olympic gold medalist, cancer survivor, and mother will speak in Richmond

Richmond, Va. (January 21, 2014) – The most decorated American gymnast in history, Shannon Miller will keynote the Nineteenth Annual Women & Wellness Forum Series on February 4, 2014, at The Jefferson Hotel. Women & Wellness benefits women’s cancer research at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Miller, a seven-time Olympic medalist, has transitioned to an advocate for women’s and children’s health and wellness and speaks around the country encouraging others to make their health a priority. After an ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2011, Miller is now cancer-free. She’s also the mother of two children.

Since its inception, the ever-expanding Women & Wellness event has raised more than $2.4 million for Massey’s research. This year’s event will feature new experiences for Women & Wellness supporters:

Bracelets for a cure: Crafted by St. Catherine’s SOCKS (Serving Our Community Kids’ Style) group, each bracelet is adorned with a pink, teal or lavender bead to symbolize awareness for women’s cancers.

Two door prizes with a total value of more than $3,000: A ranch mink ruffle wrap with pom-pom design and a pair of Lisa Nik 18k white gold london blue topaz drop earrings with diamonds.

A special reception before breakfast hosted by VCU Medical Center.

Meet and greet with Shannon Miller.

“Women & Wellness has a long-standing tradition of raising awareness of and support for women’s cancers here in Richmond,” says Kathryn Angus, chair of the Women & Wellness committee.  “We are eager to hear Shannon Miller’s encouraging message that will have attendees leaping out of their seats and inspired to action.”

Proceeds from this signature event will benefit research related to women’s cancers, including breast cancer and gynecologic cancers, at Massey Cancer Center, Richmond’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center. This year’s Women & Wellness Forum Series will be presented by the Stonehenge Cure Crew, a non-profit organization dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer through research, education, treatment, and family services.

The breakfast reception begins at 7:45 a.m. followed by the breakfast from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. The luncheon begins with a reception at 12:00 p.m., followed by the luncheon and program from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. The cost is $85 and $125 per person, respectively.
