Primrose Children’s Garden Provides Valuable Lessons in Both Science and Nutrition
At the Primrose School at Westerre Commons the children’s hard work in the garden has provided valuable life lessons.
The school’s cook, and “chief gardener”, Charlene Haith, and the teachers and children, have been hard at work in the “Primrose Patch” this year. All the hard work has paid off as the garden is bursting with over 8 different varieties of vegetables, from corn, beans, and potatoes, to cabbage and okra. As Mrs. Haith explains “the garden teaches the children so much; my children have watched the seeds they planted back in March grow into full grown plants. They have learned how each plant grows and how to care for their plants.”
As each crop becomes ready to harvest, Mrs. Haith helps students pick the vegetables, and then prepares them for lunch. Children enjoy having the chance to taste their homegrown vegetables and in the process gain an appreciation of eating a variety of fresh vegetables as part of a healthy diet!
