Volley Futbol Tournament Coming to Richmond

VolleyFutbol_1The new soccer skills game, volley futbol, is a soccer and volleyball hybrid for all ages and skill levels that promotes technique and control of the soccer ball. Because the ball bounces in soccer, it is important to be able to quickly control any ball during the game. Volley futbol teaches juggling, ball judgment (bouncing or in the air), thigh control, volleys (all types), and proper heading techniques.

Richmond’s inaugural volley futbol tournament is slated for July 26, 2014  at Ukrop Park, just off Chippenham Parkway in Richmond. Registration closes July 7.

Brandon Wright, personal trainer and youth soccer coach, is the organizer behind the tournament. Wright grew up in Tennessee and carried that love of the game in to a career in college at James Madison University where he was a volleyfutbol_3leading scorer. After a professional career, he relocated to Richmond and began teaching the love of the game and fitness to Richmond area youth.

“I noticed that small-sided games were not readily available in Richmond, and that those small-sided games helped me so much when I was growing up as a kid,” Wright said. “Players will develop a good first touch and ball handling skills when playing volley futbol  which in turn help them in soccer as well.”

The regional event will draw participants from Central Virginia and beyond and the tournament is open to all players, regardless of skill level. The tournament will have 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 game play as well as free clinics leading up to the tournament in July.
