Author and award-winning storyteller Slash Coleman celebrates his return home from New York City with an exclusive one- night performance of stories from his memoir The Bohemian Love Diaries. The free performance and book signing will take place at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in the Marble Hall as part of the First Friday program series on Friday, September 5, 2014 from six to eight o’clock.Coleman’s book The Bohemian Love Diaries is a finalist for the 17th Annual Library of Virginia People’s Choice Literary Award for non-fiction. (The winner will be announced in October). Stories from the book won the 2013 Best Action Stories Award from Storytelling World Magazine and the 2012 Best Drama Award from UnitedSolo. The one-man stage version of the The Bohemian Love Diaries (written and performed by Coleman) was performed to a sold out Off-Broadway crowd in 2013 at Theater Row.
Coleman, who has been compared to author David Sedaris (Nicole Villeneuve, 2012, Backstage Magazine, NY Review) returns to Richmond after calling the East Village of New York City home for the past three years. “My literary agent is still in New York, but I’m returning to Richmond to complete my next book. RVA is my home and has always been my true north. I’m pretty excited to be able to share my new stories at the museum,” Coleman said.
The Richmond native will bring his hometown memoir to life by combining stories of his eccentric family during the seventies and eighties (including a grandfather who danced at the Moulin Rouge) and his obsessions with the icons of his childhood – Evel Knievel and the rock band KISS, with tales of finding the girl of his dreams. The author is best known as the performer/writer of the award-winning PBS production The Neon Man and Me which was filmed at WCVE studios in Richmond and seen by over 77 million people nationwide. Coleman is currently completing his next book (due out in 2015) which chronicles his unusual little league baseball experiences in Chester. He is also shopping the TV pilot for The Bohemian Love Diaries television series which he completed last year. Coleman’s performance at the First Friday program series is free and will take place in the Marble Hall on Friday, September 5, 2014 at six o’clock. The performance is family friendly and suitable for all ages.
