Stick a fork in it, RVA.

The summer of 2014 is done.

But oh, what a summer it was. We were lucky enough to enjoy some of the most pleasant weather ever – that is, if you’re a fan of low humidity and temperatures in the eighties. I hope you have many fond memories of the summer of 2014. I know I do! Some of you became new parents over the summer, while others just sent your babies off to college. No matter what stage of the parenting game you’re in (and even if you’re not a parent), Richmond Family Magazine is here to help navigate your journey, to inform, enlighten, and entertain you with each new issue.

And guess how many issues we’ve brought you? Sixty! That’s right, RFM is five years old this month! It’s hard to believe it’s already been five years (and you print-is-dead doomsayers didn’t think we’d make it). In my travels and conversations, there seem to be two camps on the RFM age front. I have some folks who say, “I can’t believe the magazine’s only been around five years! It seems like a long-established part of the Richmond landscape.” And then there are those, among them my mother and husband, who say, “How long have you been doing this, two or three years now?” Thanks for keeping up, guys!

I can’t thank you, our loyal readers, enough for embracing RFM and telling others about us over these first five years. We couldn’t do this without you and without your support of our advertisers, the businesses who are the only source of funding for this venture. To you, RFM advertisers, thanks for making all of this possible. We will continue to work hard to make you proud to be part of the RFM family. And my personal thanks goes out to the RFM team who puts this whole thing into motion month after month. Karen, our tireless editor, thank you for bringing our readers the very best in parenting advice, health and wellness information, travel recommendations, and so much more. Tracy, your calendar rocks and is the talk of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all over town. Combine that with your ability to keep us all in the know with RFMonline.com and our vast social media networks, and just…wow! To RFM’s creative director who presents all of this fabulous information in a way that is such a beautiful sight to behold – how did I get so lucky to find someone so talented and who seems to require no sleep at all? To Kim, Michelle, Amy, and the rest of the team, you help me keep my head above water, and for that I’m eternally grateful.

We plan to celebrate our five-year mark at our favorite family music festival of the year, DiggityFEST! Come on out to Westchester Commons on Sunday, September 21, from noon to five for a day of fun, great music, and a chance to win some great prizes in honor of our five years. And here’s a secret for you…we’ll be giving away our final family four-pack of VIK tickets for LEGO KidsFest there! So spread the word – and thanks for picking up another issue of RFM!

Margaret Thompson never thought she’d be a business owner (or a mom for that matter!), but after realizing a need for a high quality, content-focused magazine for Richmond area families, she dove in! With twenty years of marketing and project management under her belt, she pulls all of the pieces together each month to get RFM out to our eager readers. Mom of two teen boys, Margaret and her husband Chris live in Hanover County.
