Chesterfield County Parks and Rec Archaeology and History Summer Camps

Diggin’ in History is for children ages 8 to 12 is an introduction to archaeology providing a variety of engaging, hands-on activities that will allow your child to experience site surveys, archaeological excavations, artifact repair and reconstruction, uncover clues from the past, and much more. A field trip to Prince George is included with the price. Snacks and water provided with fee. Location: Historic Trinity Church Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Session 1 – July 13-17; Session 2 – August 24-28. Registration required.

Historical Archaeology Camp (New!), for allow children ages 10 to 15 to develop an understanding of the archaeological process. By examining past archaeological maps and drawings participants will learn the steps of an survey and excavation. Activities include establishing grids, marking out excavation plots, screening sites and learn how to analyze soil samples. Children will also learn to decipher clues and learn about past cultures. A field trip to Prince George is included with the price. Snacks and water provided with fee. Location: Historic Trinity Church Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Session – July 27-31. Registration required.

Heritage Crafts and Games, for ages 8 to 12 is a unique camp that address many of the common period games that children would have enjoyed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Children will have the opportunity to engage in colonial and Native American craft activities and period games from pottery making, calligraphy, candle dipping, butter churning and weaving to making various crafts each day ranging from cornhusk dolls, medicine pouches, making clay pots and others. Snacks and water provided with fee. Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at four sessions that will be offered at Magnolia Grange, Chesterfield County Museum and Historic Trinity Church, all located within the historic Courthouse Complex. Registration required.
