MEDARVA Low Vision Center Hires Suzanne Kim, O.D.

Dr. Kim Joins the Organization as Director

The MEDARVA Low Vision Center, central Virginia’s only full-time independent low vision rehabilitation center, is pleased to announce Dr. Suzanne Kim as its new Director.

In her new position, Dr. Kim will oversee the center, as well as treat and provide low vision rehabilitative services to a broad range of visually impaired patients.

“I am thrilled to join the staff of the MEDARVA Low Vision Center because loss of sight can be devastating, and providing this specialized low vision care can help patients maximize their remaining vision. This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity because the services we offer may help patients regain their independence and significantly improve their quality of life.”

Dr. Kim joins the center from the West Haven VAMC where she served as the Ocular Disease/Low Vision/Acquired Brain Injury Resident. During her residency, Dr. Kim had the opportunity to evaluate and manage legally blind veterans through the Inpatient Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Center, which is a specialized program dedicated to assisting veterans in regaining independence with daily living skills. She also had the chance to work closely with young veterans returning from the Iraqi war. Many of these veterans were exposed to IED blasts/explosions and had resulting traumatic brain injuries that adversely affected their eyes and visual function. Dr. Kim also rotated through ophthalmology specialty clinics such as oculoplastics, retina, glaucoma, uveitis, and neuro-ophthalmology and had the opportunity to co-manage patients with Yale University’s ophthalmologists. Previously, Dr. Kim also worked for Rathjens Vision Care in Milford, CT as a private practice optometrist.

A graduate of University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Psychology and a doctorate degree in Optometry from Western university of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, Dr.Kim spends her free time enjoying hiking, yoga, and traveling around the world.
