Fall Frame-Up

Classic Leaf Rubbing for Kids

The fun starts with a nature walk to gather supplies. Then move the creativity inside, where kids create classic autumn artwork.

What you need:

  • Crayons
  • Lightweight paper – thin works best
  • School glue, glue stick or tape
  • Leaves – fresh are best
  • Pinecones, acorns, and twigs
  • Stiff card stock – consider recycled cardboard from a cereal box

What you do:

Leaf Rubbing

1. Gather leaves and pat them dry if moist.

2. Place leaves on a flat secure surface, underside up, where the veins of the leaves are more pronounced.

3. Place the sheet of paper over the leaf.

4. Hold the paper down firmly over leaf, and color over top of the leaf. The leaf’s design transforms onto your paper. (Hint: Try peeling off the crayon’s paper and rubbing it lengthwise over the leaf.)

5. Repeat this process with as many kinds of leaves and colors as you like.

6. Use the tape or glue stick to affix rubbing artwork to the card stock or poster board.

7. Trim card stock or poster board, leaving a frame around the leaf rubbing.

Fall Frame

Using the school glue, affix pinecones, acorns, and other natural accents to the border frame. Consider using a decorative pattern in your design.
