Happy 2023, One and All!

And just like that, 2022 is in the rearview mirror, and a shiny new year has arrived, filled with possibilities.

If I were to look back at all of my past RFM Publisher’s Notes from Januarys gone by, I’ll bet there are more than a few New Year’s resolutions that eventually fell by the wayside. But that won’t stop me from making some again this year. Last year, I consistently exercised more than I had in the past several years (I’m still loving Jazzercise – it’s so much fun!), and my goal for 2023 is to make it to at least three classes each week. I’ve found that scheduling the time on my calendar has helped me to keep the commitment, and even when I don’t feel like going, I always feel so much better after a class.

It’s too bad the month that has fitness on everyone’s mind is also the coldest, but don’t let that stop you from making plans for inside and outside fun for the entire year. We have lots of ideas in this issue, including the latest sports craze that I’m sure you noticed on our cover – pickleball! By now, you probably either know of someone who has fallen in love with pickleball, or you’ve caught the bug yourself. There’s a certain Richmond meteorologist who started playing last year and has become quite the enthusiast, to the point that he’s encouraging some of his media pals to pick up a paddle. That’s right, Andrew Freiden is loving pickleball, and we caught up with him the day he introduced it to NBC12 morning news anchor Anthony Antoine. Take your copy of RFM with you when you hit the courts and tag us on social media. Who knows, you might see Andrew or Anthony out there playing!

One of the many places around town that now offers pickleball is the Weinstein JCC, and only RFM has your chance of winning a year-long family membership to enjoy all that this amazing facility has to offer. See the next column for the details, and then head online to enter to win!

It’s a great time of year to cozy up to the laptop and plan for a spring hiking trip, and we have just the spot to stay if your plans keep you in our ultra-hike-friendly state. Check out our awesome Getaway Giveaway to Love Ridge Mountain Lodging on page 12, and visit them online at loveridgeva.com to see their wide variety of cabin options, along with info about area hiking, biking, waterfall gazing, and more.

Whether it’s pickleball, Jazzercise, working out at home or at a gym, walking with neighbors, dogs, and friends, or something else, I really want to encourage everyone to be active this year. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you!

From all of us at RFM, here’s to a fabulous 2023!
