Happy May – my favorite month!

If I dared look back at the three other May Publisher’s Notes I’ve written (I can’t believe it’s been that long!), I’ll bet they say the same thing – this is my favorite month of the year! The weather is warm, but not hot, the April pollen is mostly gone, and oh yes, my birthday is this month!

So many people around my advanced age claim they’d rather forget their birthday – skip it all together. No way, I say! For starters, it sure beats the alternative, right? And especially for us moms, what other day can be all about us – at least if you really work it and not let all of those other daily obligations take over. Sure, there’s the other big day this month, Mother’s Day. But even then, if we’re lucky, we’re usually busy celebrating our own mothers, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers.

This year, my birthday falls on a super-busy day in Richmond, Saturday, May 18. The RFM calendar is packed with great things to do that day, including the Family Safety Fair at Chesterfield Towne Center, Imagination Richmond at The Shops at Willow Lawn, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Short Pump Town Center, and two of my favorite events of the whole year: Dominion Riverrock and Rassawek Spring Jubilee.

There are lots of other great family-friendly happenings in RVA this month, including the March for Babies on Sunday morning, May 5, in Innsbrook, and a brand new event that afternoon. Head on over to Deep Run High School between noon and five for Stir It Up, a fun and educational afternoon centered around eating well, moving well, and being well. There will be lots of interactive games, tasty and healthy food (including my personal favorite, the Boka Tako truck!), prizes, and more. And mark your calendars for Sunday, May 12, and hear international lyacclaimed food allergy educator and musician Kyle Dine at CmoR Central. Finish off the month at one of Richmond’s newest and coolest annual traditions, Rocketts Red Glare, with the city’s only Memorial Day fireworks show over the James River, returning to Rocketts Landing on Sunday, May 26.

With spring in full swing, there are loads of opportunities to get out and get moving with the family. And if all these events don’t motivate you, I know our picks for the area’s top playgrounds on page 12 will! Enjoy all our city has to offer, and don’t miss our fabulous reader giveaway on page 8. We’re giving you a chance to win a family membership from some of the most popular museums and attractions in RVA – good luck and happy reading!

Margaret Thompson never thought she’d be a business owner (or a mom for that matter!), but after realizing a need for a high quality, content-focused magazine for Richmond area families, she dove in! With twenty years of marketing and project management under her belt, she pulls all of the pieces together each month to get RFM out to our eager readers. Mom of two teen boys, Margaret and her husband Chris live in Hanover County.
