Happy Pumpkin Spice Everything Season!

It is getting a little out of hand, isn’t it?! Starbucks really created a beast, but everyone seems to love pumpkin-y anything in the fall, and lucky for you, we have some tasty pumpkin-inspired recipes in What’s Cooking to celebrate October. And if you’re as excited about Halloween events and showing off those cool costumes as we are, you’ll love this month’s calendar, starting on page forty-eight. When you see a pumpkin next to an event, that means costumes are encouraged, so get your phones charged up for lots of photo opps all month long!

October holds a special place in my heart, not for the lattes or Halloween costumes, but for a special anniversary – ours!

I can’t believe it’s been seven years since we published RFM’s inaugural issue – this is our eighty-fifth one! Back in 2009, one of my early Publisher’s Notes looked like this:

“…There was much excitement as we saw the magazine in public for the first time. My 3-year-old can now spot the cover from a mile away. ‘Look Mommy, your magazine!’ he proudly shouts as we walk into Ukrop’s. ‘I like the purple… it’s the prettiest book up there!’ (I am NOT making that up!)”

Who would have imagined back then that there would be no more Ukrop’s just a few short years later? And the 3-year-old, who was surely walking beside his 1-year-old baby brother? Those little guys are eight and ten now, and in the fifth and third grades (and not nearly as star-struck to see RFM on the racks every month, but still emphatic that it’s the best-looking magazine in Richmond!).

What a fun time we’ve had, our family, and the entire RFM team, bringing you this great resource every month. I’ve probably thanked you every October for your loyalty, and we’ll never stop being grateful that you choose to pick up RFM each month and tell your friends and family all about us. What started as 24,000 copies of a 36-page magazine back in ’09, now has 40,000 copies flying off the racks each month (and a lot more pages, too).

Here we are, seven years later, and still as committed as ever to bringing you relevant and timely information for families of all shapes and sizes, at every stage of the game. We love meeting you at community events, interacting with you on social media (Facebook and Twitter were babies back then, and Instagram and Pinterest didn’t even exist when we started!), and receiving your feedback via email. We always appreciate hearing from you, so keep the ideas coming, and keep telling your friends about RFM – they’ll thank you, just like we thank you!

Margaret Thompson never thought she’d be a business owner (or a mom for that matter!), but after realizing a need for a high quality, content-focused magazine for Richmond area families, she dove in! With twenty years of marketing and project management under her belt, she pulls all of the pieces together each month to get RFM out to our eager readers. Mom of two teen boys, Margaret and her husband Chris live in Hanover County.
