January 2010 Publisher’s Page

“Slow down, you move too fast…” Simon & Garfunkel sure sang a mouthful in 1966 with those lyrics.
Back then, who would have imagined the frantic pace in which we would all be moving in 2010. After the frenzy of the holidays, I think January should be made the official month of taking a deep breath and relaxing – with a good magazine, of course!

With more distractions and obligations than ever, there are too many chances to miss quiet moments with loved ones and friends. One too many emails, texts, and phone calls, and before you know it, it’s bedtime for the kids, and you’ve missed yet another opportunity to snuggle under a blanket and drink hot cocoa with the family.

In this age of perpetual exhaustion, why haven’t we realized that if we spent half the time sleeping that we spend on Facebook and Twitter, we’d all be well-rested for a change?

So how do I go about unplugging and seeing through my New Year’s resolution to slow down and give my undivided attention to my family? Once everyone knows you get email on your phone, how do you explain a less-than-speedy response? And then there are the folks who expect you to know things because they posted it on Facebook. What if I miss breaking news because I’m not tuned in?

And as I pen this just days after receiving a speeding ticket (I swear I was going to tell you, honey), I am reminded of my need to literally slow down. It seems everyone is in a hurry – late for school, dashing off to swim lessons, scout meetings, soccer, ballet… AAAAHHHH! When is it time to finally say it’s too much?

I have no answers to these many questions, so feel free to email me your thoughts, suggestions, and ways that you make it all fit into the day without going insane. But be warned that I might not respond right away…
