Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

The most fun I’ve had reading non-fiction.

Written by psychotherapist, New York Times best-selling author, and national advice columnist Lori Gottlieb, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone chronicles the author’s sessions with a series of her patients, while also sharing her own experience as a patient in therapy.

I knew it was non-fiction, but at one point I did double-check. It’s more entertaining than a typical self-help book, which can be attributed to Gottlieb’s infusion of humor, candor, and wisdom.

As Gottlieb takes us on a journey as her patients grapple with their challenges, all the while exploring her own issues with a therapist, she gives us a true insider’s look at therapy. Sprinkling in various psychology theories and contributions from some of the world’s renowned psychologists throughout the book, the author shows us the inherent nature of human feelings. She normalizes therapy for everyone and nudges us to contemplate our own emotions and behaviors.

Since the book was not mine and I’m not a highlight-the-important-parts kind of reader anyway, I took screenshots of many insightful passages to reread later. I also sent a few screenshots to friends and family members.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is a strong contender for my favorite book of the year, and I think you’ll enjoy it, too.
