October 2010 Publisher's Page

I am so excited that it’s October. There are tons of fun fall things to do all month long – AND it’s Richmond Family Magazine’s anniversary!

You know, even though we’ve been doing this for a while now, I still find it hard to believe that Miss “I’m Never Having Kids” (that’s me!) Has two kids and a parenting magazine to her credit. But I have to tell you – I’m certainly having a blast with all three! As a family, we’ve had such a great time bringing the magazine all around town this year and enjoying all of the great festivals and events we’ve attended. As publisher, it’s been amazing how many people I’ve met and cool places I’ve visited.

It has been so rewarding to hear all of the positive feedback about Richmond Family. Readers tell us what a valuable resource it is, how much they appreciate the quality of the writing, the awesome calendar with so many free events, the recipes, book reviews, and the diversity of the articles each month. I love the Blue Ridge article in this issue, and can’t wait to head west with my crew. Crabtree Falls was our favorite fall spot pre-kids, and now (at least until the kids are old enough to hike up that mountain on their own!), we love visiting Carter Mountain Orchard each October for warm apple doughnuts and a bag of apples.

I also want to hear how we can make RFM even better for you. When you get a minute, please check out the survey on our website. Tell us a little bit about you, and what you want in a parenting magazine.

Something I know parents want? Savings, that’s what! To thank our readers, we asked local businesses to pick just one day during Richmond Family’s anniversary month and come up with an exclusive offer. There are some very special values – family activities, yummy treats, retail discounts – all to celebrate Richmond Family Magazine. Flip to page 24 and I’m sure you’ll agree. Be sure to check ahead because some of them require advanced planning or reservations (although I admire you if you’re the type who can just pick up the magazine on Sunday, October 17th and say, “Hey gang, let’s go to Massanutten!”). I for one plan to take advantage of all of these deals, and believe it or not, we’ll have even more offers on the RFM website, Facebook and Twitter.

Enjoy all that October has to offer, and again, a HUGE thank you for picking up Richmond Family Magazine every month. I love that Richmond is home to so many well-read parents!

Margaret Thompson never thought she’d be a business owner (or a mom for that matter!), but after realizing a need for a high quality, content-focused magazine for Richmond area families, she dove in! With twenty years of marketing and project management under her belt, she pulls all of the pieces together each month to get RFM out to our eager readers. Mom of two teen boys, Margaret and her husband Chris live in Hanover County.
