October 2011 Publisher’s Page

October was already one of my favorite months. Now, it has even more significance.

It marks RFM’s anniversary – two years! How fitting that one of our features this month is all about mompreneurs, a term I never thought would apply to me. I was always content to be the employee, not the employer, and I never aspired to one day own a business. But after meeting our fabulous creative team and realizing the potential, an idea was hatched, my fate was seemingly sealed, and a few months later, the first RFM was published.

Just as the moms in the article on page 16 describe, we mompreneurs are passionate about our businesses, we are definitely NOT in it just for the money (believe me, if I were, you would never be reading this second anniversary issue!), and we are willing to grow the business slowly and steadily to make it a success. And the passion for the business often makes it worth the sacrifices that sometimes have to be made. Evening meetings might mean I’m away from home for dinner and bedtime. When I am home, the laptop routinely comes back out as soon as the kids are tucked in. Being a mompreneur means bribing the kids to keep quiet during an important call. It means flipping through pages of scribbles to find a clean sheet in the notepad during a sales meeting. But it also means making your family proud as they watch you work hard to make a go of something. It means instilling important values in your kids, that hard work and perseverance will lead to success and a finished product that others value and appreciate.

Two years after we first brought you Richmond Family Magazine, the team and I are just as passionate about offering readers (moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, too!) an informative, inspiring, and enlightening break from their busy lives. If you think of it, as a favor to me, please do one of these two things: recommend RFM to a friend who might not have heard about us; or tell an advertiser that you saw their ad right here.

Now, it’s time to look at another awesome issue, featuring a calendar that is so loaded with local fall festivals, events, and activities that we had to continue it online. If you’re looking to take a daytrip, Joan Tupponce has some great spots for your family to discover in Fredericksburg, so be sure to check it out on page 12. And if you didn’t read last month’s feature on Shenandoah National Park, head over to our website to read up on this fabulous destination and its beautiful fall foliage.

Enjoy this issue, and all that autumn has to offer!

Margaret Thompson never thought she’d be a business owner (or a mom for that matter!), but after realizing a need for a high quality, content-focused magazine for Richmond area families, she dove in! With twenty years of marketing and project management under her belt, she pulls all of the pieces together each month to get RFM out to our eager readers. Mom of two teen boys, Margaret and her husband Chris live in Hanover County.
