This slick and stylish mystery is a riveting read.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been making an effort to spend more of my spare time reading and less of it on social media. Because everything current has a mile-long waiting list at the local libraries, I’ve had good luck with some of the more popular book club picks from last year. Here’s to reading’s big comeback! The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda, one of Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine Book Club picks from 2019, is a title I recommend wholeheartedly.
It had been a long while since I’d read a murder mystery, so it was fun to go on this journey with the book’s main character, Avery, as she sets out to discover the truth about the death of her best friend, Sadie. While the local police quickly ruled the death a suicide, Avery starts to feel like people are blaming her and becomes intent on clearing her name.
Set in the quaint coastal town of Littleport, Maine, the author’s vivid descriptions of the scenery immerse the reader in this vacation paradise and had me nearly tasting the salt air coming off of the chilly northern shore. The story explores female friendship, along with the lifestyles of the wealthy summer visitors versus the town’s year-round residents and what happens when the two interact. The book was fast-paced with plenty of plot twists, and I must say I didn’t see the ending coming.
