A spoken word performance that slices into American history exploring race, culture and class.  Refreshing and fun, “Makin’ Cake” leaves room for dessert and dialogue with a cake reception immediately following the performance.

Movement and play are good for children’s bodies and brains. In fact, movement can help increase memory, perception, language comprehension, attention, emotional understanding, and decision making. Dress up and move, move, move. This event is free with museum admission.

Malik Yakini will share some of his experiences and lessons learned in co-founding and leading the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network. He will share his thinking about America’s colonial legacy, the country’s ongoing racial oppression and how those factors shape land ownership, food, agriculture, and economics.
