Celebrate Earth Day with Free E-Cycling at the Science Museum of Virginia

In celebration of Earth Day, the Science Museum of Virginia will host a weekend of environmental-themed programming that will highlight the wonder of the Earth and draw attention to the importance of caring for the environment.

“Earth Day may be a single day, but we celebrate its mission every day at the Museum,” says Richard Conti, chief wonder officer, Science Museum of Virginia. “Educating our community about our world and engaging them with actionable ways to reduce our impact on our Earth is at the forefront of our programming and overall mission.”

E-Cyling is Free Friday, April 21

Participate in an e-cycling drive. Drop off old and broken computers, phones, batteries, CDs, and more to be safely recycled through AERC Recycling Solutions. The locally operated, certified electronics recycling facility specializes in disposing of assets containing sensitive data or hazardous components and maintains a zero waste-to-landfill policy.

Throughout the weekend, guests can engage with several environmentally-focused experiences and programs:

Uncover the importance of sustainable practices in the traveling exhibit, Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea. The eye-opening gallery showcases marine wildlife sculptures made entirely from plastic pollution recovered from the ocean and illustrates the worldwide issue of litter’s impact on the environment. Understand more about how local actions impact the global community and explore the Rainkeepers exhibit to learn sustainable practices that can be accomplished at home.

Appreciate the beauty of the Earth by stepping into the immersive Dome theater and watch nature unfold in the giant screen movie Wild Africa.

Explore a collection of oil paintings featuring figures from Greek mythology reacting to human impacts on the planet. See local high school and college students’ artwork depicting elements of climate change and resiliency. Enjoy informal learning experiences through hands-on lab experiments and presentations of environmental data projected on the six-foot, suspended Science on a Sphere® globe.

E-cycling is a free event in partnership with AERC. Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea is included with Museum admission. Admission tickets are $14 with $1 discounts for ages 4-12 and 60+. Additional pricing for Dome Features apply. Visit smv.org or call 804.864.1400 for details.
