*Program Notes
We hope you like the changes that our staff has incorporated within this season’s festival. Here are some additional noted from the program office for your information.

Freedom Fest 2013 featuring “Gumbo: A Night of Blues, Jazz and Light R & B from Central Virginia’s Finest” is a program of the City of Richmond that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans and also highlights accomplishments of people of African descent in today’s world. This program was compiled by Carlton Blount and features many local artists.
4th Annual Gospel Music Fest with the Belle is our annual gospel showcase which features local and national acts within the gospel world. The talent is coordinated through and is hosted by Sheilah Belle who is a publicist within the gospel industry, radio personality with Praise 104.7 FM and President of The Belle Report.

“Heal the Land” is a presentation by the youth of the West End Assembly of God, featuring primarily music and dance. The focus of the content is very patriotic.

Melena: A Cultural & Musical Journey into my Afro Cuban Roots is based on the true life story of Melena, a professional percussionist born in Havana Cuba, and her search for her family history through her passion for the music of her country. It is Melena’s self discovery and successful journey through the music of her culture, and the obstacles she overcame through her journey because of her intense passion to learn as much as she could about her native country, simply because of her drive to be the best at her chosen profession as she could be, an Afro Cuban percussionist, one of the few Latina percussionists in an industry dominated by male percussionists.

“Footloose” is the stage version of the movie starring Kevin Bacon. A teen and his mother move from Chicago to a much smaller town where dances have been banned, largely due to the efforts of a local preacher. The acting and singing is performed totally by volunteers.
“Life Stage” is a cultural arts program of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities in partnership Mayor’s Youth Academy. Now in its eleventh year, this program showcases the talents of youth through dance, music, spoken word and theater.

The Virginia Opera has partnered with Norfolk, Virginia to create a wonderful tradition of opera in their parks. For the first time, we are also working on that same concept for Richmond with the Virginia Opera and The Richmond Symphony to present “Opera in the Park” – Richmond style on Saturday, August 31. They will be presenting arias, duets, etc. from the upcoming opera season.
