Evan McKeel is as psyched as anyone could be about performing with indie rock band MUTEMATH at The National, Monday, March 21. As you might recall, Evan sang one of the band’s songs, “Typical” in the blind auditions for Season 9 of NBC’s The Voice.
“They are one of my favorite bands,” Evan says, taking a break from his home-based recording studio.
The group first contacted Evan after his blind audition, thanking him for performing one of their songs. While he was competing on The Voice, he received a request from the group’s team to see if he could join them to sing Typical during a concert in Los Angeles. His schedule wouldn’t allow it at the time, but he told them to let him know if they ever came to Richmond. And so they did.
Since finishing The Voice, Evan has been in the studio writing and creating new songs. He’s also been writing with friends in Nashville. After visiting The Music City and realizing the energy there, he has decided to move Nashville, something he will be doing in the next few weeks. “I have so many good connections there and people I’ve been writing with,” he says. “It’s a great place to maximize your creativity and productivity.”
He’s been working on networking and connecting with important people in the music industry. “It’s hard to get a meeting with them,” he says, noting the importance of having good songs ready to go when that chance rolls around.
At the moment, Evan is finishing up his new music release – more to come on that later. And, he’s staying in touch with his friends from The Voice. “It’s a nice little brotherhood and sisterhood,” he says.
And, yes, he’s watching the show now because several of the singers in the competition had auditioned with him last season. “The show has great singers every year,” he says.
