InLight Richmond Lantern Making

Terry_Brown-9634InLight Richmond 2013 is 1708 Gallery’s 6th annual, public exhibition of light-based art and performances. Free to all, InLight Richmond will kick off with a Community Lantern Parade on Friday, November 8, 2013 in Shockoe along the Riverfront Canal Walk. 1708 Gallery has organized a series of lantern-making workshops throughout the fall to provide an opportunity for Richmonders to participate in InLight Richmond. The schedule includes family-friendly workshops for all ages and skill levels encouraging all participants to explore their creative side. Most of the workshops are free unless otherwise noted. See the attached list of workshops.

In addition to the public workshops, 1708 Gallery is pleased to present workshops for a variety of community organizations including The Boys and Girls Club, The Daily Planet, SCAN, Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Virginia Treatment Center for Children, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Schools in the Richmond region are also invited to participate through their art classes. Teachers can find information to share with their classes like easy DIY lanterns, a history of lanterns, and flyers about InLight Richmond to send home to parents at www.1708gallery.org/inlight.

To participate in InLight Richmond’s Community Lantern Parade bring a lantern you’ve made at home, in one of our public workshops, or make one with us just before the parade kicks off InLight Richmond 2013. We will gather at a to-be-announced location at 7 p.m. (look for all the lanterns) where you will receive an LED candle for your lantern. The parade will begin at 7:30 p.m. More information about where to meet, where to park, etc. will be available soon at www.1708gallery.org/inlight.

If you can’t make it to a workshop, we encourage you to make lanterns at home with your family and friends. You can find a list of DIY lanterns with simple step-by-step instructions at www.1708gallery.org/inlight. These lanterns are easy and fun for all ages and are made using objects you might already have around the house like balloons, milk cartons, tin cans, glass jars, etc.
