Lottery Seeks Nominations for Outstanding Educators

EDUCATION SUPERSTARS TO BE HONORED WITH
VIRGINIA LOTTERY SUPER TEACHER AWARDS

You can help celebrate Virginia’s heroes of education by nominating a Super Teacher. The Virginia Lottery’s Super Teacher Awards honor outstanding Virginia public school teachers, and thanks them for their dedication and commitment to students and their families. This program recognizes teachers who go the extra mile each day and inspire others to do the same.
Since 2008, the Super Teacher program has honored 40 of Virginia’s finest teachers. This year, eight more teachers from across the state will join the ranks of Virginia Lottery Super Teachers. The Virginia Lottery, The Supply Room Companies and the Virginia PTA partner to present these awards during a surprise presentation at the winning teacher’s school. These presentations bring fun and excitement to the schools as students, colleagues, administrators and other local VIPs join together to honor the winning teacher.

How does it work? Anyone 18 or older can nominate a K-12 Virginia public school teacher by providing some basic contact information, answering a few questions and – new this year – submitting photos or a short video if they wish.

What’s the prize? Each Super Teacher receives a $2,000 cash prize from the Virginia Lottery, and a $2,000 classroom supply credit from The Supply Room Companies. This year, all eight Super Teacher schools will qualify for a second contest. One school will be chosen to win an additional $5,000 credit from The Supply Room Companies to purchase items for the entire school. The school will be selected through a Facebook contest.

“A talented and dedicated educator can make such an incredible difference in a person’s life,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “These men and women are instrumental in shaping our children into tomorrow’s leaders, and the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher program is an excellent way to recognize these efforts.”

The eight winners will be selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders, including:
• Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary, former State Superintendent for Public Instruction
• The Honorable James W. Dyke, former Virginia Secretary of Education
• Dr. Martha Ross, professor emerita, James Madison University
• Anne Carson, president of the Virginia Parent Teacher Association
• Steve Ahn, 2012 Super Teacher and science teacher at Abingdon H.S.

Official rules and nomination forms are available at http://vasuperteacher.com/. Nominations must be received by February 15, 2013. The winners will then be selected on the strength of their nominations. Winners will be announced in the spring and early summer in the winning teacher’s hometown.

“We are so appreciative of The Supply Room Companies’ and the Virginia PTA’s support of this program,” said Otto. “We have consistently received more than 1,000 Super Teacher nominations each year. We hope to see even more compelling nominations this year.”

When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is game. In fact, it’s the reason we play. We generate more than $1.3 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Virginia Lottery generated more than $487.1 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2012.
