The Daily Beast ranked the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies as the tenth best public high school in the nation.
According to The Daily Beast, six indicators were examined from school surveys to compare public high schools in the United States, with graduation and college acceptance rates weighed most heavily. Other criteria included: college-level courses and exams, percentage of students with free or reduced lunch, as well as SAT and ACT scores – another mark of how well a school prepares students for college.
“This prestigious recognition is shared by our exemplary students, families, staff, and partnering school divisions who combine to make Maggie L. Walker a shining example of regional cooperation in public education,” said Director Jeff McGee. “We are proud to be listed among these other great public schools.”

ABOUT THE MAGGIE L. WALKER GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL
The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is a public, regional high school located in Virginia’s state capital, whose mission is “to provide broad-based educational opportunities that develop gifted students’ understanding of world cultures and languages as well as the ability to lead, participate, and contribute in a rapidly changing global society.” The participating school divisions are Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Hopewell, King and Queen, New Kent, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George, and Richmond.
MLWGS is known for its outstanding academic record and high rankings in scholastic competitions. All classes are taught at an AP, university, or honors level. The class of 2014 received over $13 million in scholarships totaling more than $80,000 per student.
