Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call to partner with Fit4Kids to collect
sports equipment that will provide area children with the resources they need to get moving!
On Monday, June 2, 2014 Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call will kick off their second annual AdvanceItUp! (AIU!) collection. AIU! is a community initiative designed to increase recreation options and active living at home and school for area kids who do not have access to usable sports equipment. The public is encouraged to gather up the sporting goods that they no longer use and that are still in good condition and donate them. The donations will benefit deserving area children through the partnerships and programs of Greater Richmond Fit4Kids.
Last year, Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call collected over 500 pieces of equipment. Mary Dunne Stewart, Executive Director of Fit4Kids says about utilizing the donations “It was wonderful to see the excitement on children’s faces when they received their “new to them” bikes and scooters. And it was incredibly gratifying to distribute tennis, baseball, softball, and golf equipment to our friends at Richmond Public Schools. We are incredibly grateful for this equipment and our partners are eager for this collection.”
Donations for the 2014 AdvanceItUp! collection will be accepted from June 2 through June 30, 2014. Drop off points include Advanced Orthopaedics on Shrader Road and in St. Francis Medical Pavilion, as well as both Ortho On-Call locations (Midlothian and Westbury). Donations will also be collected at the Science Museum of Virginia which is the location of the Greater Richmond Fit4Kids office. The program will accept most types of sporting equipment, excluding uniforms and used safety gear like helmets.
Jeff Grant MPH, a physician’s assistant with Ortho On-Call says “We are excited about the opportunity to participate in a program that will help children to build both strong bodies and minds by increasing their access to sports.” The physicians and staff from Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call, along with volunteers from Fit4Kids, will collect, organize, and clean the equipment before distribution.
More details including a list of needed equipment are available on the program’s web page AdvancedOrtho.me/AdvanceItUp! Questions? Call 804-527-6809.

Advanced Orthopaedics is a full-service orthopaedic practice located in Central Virginia. Patients are treated by the expertise of a trained subspecialist, a physician who dedicates his entire practice to one area of orthopaedics. Advanced Orthopaedics features ten separate “Centers of Excellence.” Each center focuses on the treatment of one specific area of the body or one type of orthopaedic health concern. All of the centers combined provide excellent full-service orthopaedic care. Advanced Orthopaedics is one of the few practices in the nation where each physician specializes not only in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, but in a particular branch of orthopaedics as well. Learn more at www.advancedortho.me.
Ortho On-Call is the area’s first walk-in urgent care clinic designed to treat acute orthopaedic-related injuries and conditions. Ortho On-Call only treats orthopaedic injuries, so patients do not compete for care with patients who may have serious medical problems that take longer to diagnose and treat. Ortho On-Call is supported by the board-certified physicians and full-service therapies at Advanced Orthopaedic Centers. Learn more atwww.orthooncall.me.
Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellness of children by increasing physical activity and promoting healthy eating. “Giving sporting equipment to children in Fit4Kids’ programs helps them adopt the healthy habits we teach and encourages them to lead an active lifestyle at home,” says Mary Dunne Stewart, Executive Director of Greater Richmond Fit4Kids. “Some of the equipment will also be donated to the Physical Education department of Richmond City Public Schools to supplement their efforts to promote a physically active lifestyle in their students.” Learn more at www.grfit4kids.org.
