Richmond Family Magazine (RFM) named a kid-powered recycling program from
Curtis Elementary School in Chesterfield County as the winner of its Education Shout-Out contest.
Through Education Shout-Out, area parents and educators submitted real-world examples of education enrichment to RFM. Faculty members from VCU School of Education then chose three finalists from the pool of entries. Ultimately, RFM readers voted online to designate a winning program.
The Curtis Conservationists of Curtis Elementary in Chester is an in-school recycling initiative that helps kids realize the value of environmental stewardship. “Our group collects between 20 to 70 pounds of recycling a week. That’s recyclable waste that was once going to the landfill,” said Jennifer Swartz, a special education teacher who serves as faculty coordinator for the program.
Swartz said the children give up recess time to participate in the program. “Pretty amazing for a group of eight- and nine-year-olds,” Swartz said.
As part of RFM’s celebration package, the school will receive a concert from family entertainment group, The Diggity Dudes, with refreshments from Tropical Smoothie Café. The concert on school grounds is scheduled for Friday, June 17.
RFM is a monthly parenting publication, available free at over 700 locations in Central Virginia, including every Kroger, Martin’s and Wawa from Ashland to Petersburg. The magazine’s mission is to help Richmond’s parents build healthy families.
