Seussical – A Theatre IV Production
Oh the places you’ll go when you put a fabulous script and score in the hands of a fabulous cast in a fabulous downtown Richmond theater. This perfect storm comes in the form of Seussical, on stage through May 20th at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre.
From the opening number, with the eye-popping costumes and the colorful set, to the surprise at the end (just you wait!), Seussical entertained kids and adults alike. This two hour trip through Who-ville weaves together several of the legendary author’s most-loved tales, with Horton Hears a Who as the central story (if you haven’t read it as a family, I’d recommend picking up a copy before heading to the play).
I was a little nervous about the length of the production when I brought my antsy three and five year-old boys, but surprisingly (to me anyway), they didn’t budge for the entire hour before the 15 minute intermission, and they were excited to return to their seats for the remaining 45 minutes of the show.
The cast, the largest we’ve seen in our short children’s theater-going tenure, features eighteen adults and five children, including third grader Nicholas Caviness, who expertly plays JoJo, and Ellie Wilson, the picture of precociousness, perfectly cast as the Young Kangaroo. Casting has always been a strong suit for Theatre IV and once again, the actors were paired to a T, especially Jason Marks as Horton, Susan Sanford as Mayzie LaBird, and Aly Wepplo s Gertrude McFuzz.
If you’re looking for a slightly longer production to musically usher your little kids to the next level of fine performing arts, this is it. Of course, the parents, the grands, and the rest of the kids will adore it too!
Spring has sprung in Central Virginia, but for just a couple of hours, head indoors for this musical treat for the whole family.
