New Name, New Home for Popular Race as Short Pump Mile Moves to Regency

The Live Red Foundation will take over leadership of The Short Pump Mile, which was previously presented by the NOVA of Virginia Aquatics.

With this new leadership, comes a new location at Regency Mall for the largest timed youth road race in Richmond, which has attracted over 1,300 runners in recent years. The new race will keep all the things that have made this race great in the past: a fun family environment, school participation cash awards, one-year age group heats, and great awards including gift certificates for overall winners. All proceeds benefit local kids through the Live Red Foundation’s free community fitness programs and donations to local schools’ PE programs.

The Regency Mile is a youth-only event, Saturday, October 26, from noon to four at Regency Mall. The distance is one mile for any participant age eighteen and younger and is open to special-needs athletes as well. There is also an express run for ages five and under.

Schools can earn cash for their physical education programs by entering the School Participation Competition. To participate, students must enter their school’s name when they register at livered.org. The top five schools with the largest number of runners in the race will be awarded prizes: $600 for first, $500 for second, $400 for third, $300 for fourth, $200 for fifth. Also, any school not in the top five with at least twenty-five participants in the Regency Mile will win $100.

Individual awards will also be distributed. Top five overall male and female participants receive plaques and gift certificates ($100 for first, $75 for second, $50 for third, and $25 for both fourth and fifth places). Top ten in each age group will receive plaques. Most age groups are one-year age groups. All participants receive a medal when they cross the finish line.

The Live Red Foundation is looking for sponsors to help make the Regency Mile a special event and affordable for many families. By sponsoring the event, your business, organization, or family helps area children learn how fun running can be and supports community outreach. One hundred of proceeds benefit local school children through the Live Red Foundation’s free community fitness programs and schools’ physical education departments.
