Veritas School, Richmond’s only classical Christian School, began the academic year earlier this month at the corner of Brook Road and Westwood Avenue in historic Northside Richmond. After thirteen years sharing property with Crestwood Presbyterian and Stony Point Churches in Chesterfield County, steadily increasing student enrollment necessitated the move to a larger, permanent home.
“As we began the search for our new campus, board members were particularly excited about the possibility of locating our unique academic offering in an historic Richmond city property” explained Head of School Keith Nix. “When the Baptist Theological Seminary buildings became available, they were by far our first choice. In this property, we find both beautiful academic space, and an outdoor environment to enrich both mind and soul. We are thrilled to continue the nearly 100-year tradition of Christian education on this corner in Northside Richmond.”
In addition to the nearly 70,000 square feet now owned or leased by Veritas School for academic and arts programs, Veritas’ athletic department has partnered with two local Richmond institutions, Union Seminary and U-Turn to provide facilities for the school’s robust sports programming.
Opening in 2000 with 25 students, Veritas School is now home to 331 students in the K4 – 12th grade program. In the classical, Christian model, Veritas offers significant study of the great works of art, literature and philosophy, exceptional instruction in math and science, formal training in logic and rhetoric, fully integrated visual and performing arts, and systematic instruction in Latin.
Nix concluded: “Our new permanent campus allows Veritas School to participate more fully in the life of our city, to begin a new chapter of Christian scholarship in these treasured historic buildings and to provide a rich environment for the academic, physical and spiritual growth of our students and families. We couldn’t be happier.”
