VMFA’s Jeffrey Allison to Give Talk at William King Museum

Abingdon, Virginia (December 3, 2013) – William King Museum is proud to welcome Jeffrey Allison, Paul Mellon Collection Educator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, for a special tour of European Modern on Thursday, December 5 at 7 p.m.

European Modern: Master Artists from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts features hand-selected works which trace the history of Modernism from its earliest roots. Visitors will have the opportunity to delight in the drawn and painterly techniques that span generations of important European artists as they journeyed away from the defined edges of Neoclassicism and toward the uninhibited marks of the Modern Era. Artists on view include Neoclassicists, English Painters, and German Expressionists. Become acquainted with works by the famous French Impressionists such as Degas, Cezanne, Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh, and many other memorable names from art history.

Jeffrey W. Allison is the Paul Mellon Collection Educator at VMFA and a professional photographer. He holds a BA in photography and film from Virginia Intermont College and an MFA in photography from VCU. He currently teaches Advanced and Intermediate Photography at the VMFA Studio School and has taught for over twenty-five years at institutions across the commonwealth.

“Jeffrey’s talks are always immensely engaging and informative. The William King Museum is thrilled to welcome him back for what will be another fantastic tour,” says Callie Hietala, Curator of Museum Programming.

Allison has curated numerous exhibitions of photography, including Unbroken Circle: Unto the Generations, Photographs by Steve Wall and Egypt Through the Drawing Room: 19th Century Stereographs of Egypt; as well as the Paul Mellon Arts in Education exhibitions, Faces at the Races: Equine Culture in Virginia, and A Horse of Course! Equine Images in Art at VMFA, which are traveling to locations throughout the Commonwealth.

More recently, Allison was consultant on the upcoming Discovery Channel series Ancient Origins of Native American and the New York Times Magazine article, Horace Bristol and the Grapes of Wrath. His awards include the 2010 John Kent Shumate Advocate of the Year. Allison’s own photographic works are in numerous collections including Capital One.

This guided tour is free and open to the public. European Modern: Master Artists from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be on display until January 5, 2014.
